Dorothy “Dottie” West Simmons

Dorothy “Dottie” West Simmons, 78, of Newport, North Carolina, peacefully went to be with her Savior on September 30, 2024, surrounded by her family. She has left behind a legacy of love, resilience, and generosity that will continue to inspire all who knew her. 

Dottie was born on August 28, 1946, to the late Dorothy “Dot” and Dorval Wayne West Jr. She graduated salutatorian from Newport High School in 1964 and lived in Atlanta, Chicago, and Denver before moving back home to Newport. She loved the beach, reading, and anything with chocolate. 

She is survived by her daughter, Ashley Simmons Petschauer (Matthew), and she was a devoted grandmother to “her babies” Jonathan West and Addison Olivia. Dottie also leaves behind her siblings, Evelyn Eidell, Judy Linebarger (Jerry), Wayne West III (Marianne), and 5 nieces and nephews.

Dottie’s memory will forever be cherished by those who were lucky enough to know her. 

A graveside service to celebrate her life will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, October 6 at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Newport. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service as well as after the service at Dottie’s home.

So her generous spirit will continue to make a difference in the lives of others, in lieu of flowers, her family requests that donations be made to the Dottie West Simmons Scholarship at Carteret Community College, 3505 Arendell St., Morehead City, NC 28557.
