Dorothy Natalie Smith Goodwin, 82, of Atlantic, passed away quietly at Britthaven of Havelock Tuesday afternoon, February 2, 2010.
Although she was born at South Boston, VA, Dorothy considered herself a native of Atlantic having lived there from the age of two. She was in the last class to graduate from Atlantic High School, when there were only 11 grades in 1945. She remembered the depression and rationing and helping soldiers enjoy dances and movies, while on liberty from Atlantic Field during WWII. She became an X-Ray Technician and met Henry M. Goodwin, Jr. She married the love of her life June 14, 1947 in Atlantic Methodist Church. After the Air Force sent them to FL and Casablanca, they settled back in Atlantic to raise their two children. Dorothy was active in her church and was a Cub Scout den mother while in Atlantic. She then had to move to Robins Air Force Base in the 1960's. Again she became active in her church and Boy Scouts, adding Girl Scouts, Eastern Star and Rainbow Girls to her list of activities. When her husband retired from the Air Force, they returned to Carteret County and found a home in Morehead City. Though devastated by the loss of her husband, Dorothy still worked to help young people. While owning her own fabric store, Needle and Thread in Morehead City, she was instrumental in starting the Naomi chapter of the Order of Rainbow for Girls in Carteret County and tried to get a Demolay chapter going as well. After several years, she had to retire from her activities to care for her mother and shortly after her mother's death, her own health began to decline. She was always proud of "her Rainbow girls" and tried to keep track of their accomplishments.
Graveside services will be held 11:00 am Saturday at Atlantic Community Cemetery with Rev. Paul Harris officiating.
She is survived by her daughter, Florence-Elizabeth Goodwin, her son, Henry-Lee Goodwin, two grandchildren, Natalie L. Goodwin and John Henry Goodwin and all of her "Rainbow Girls".
The family will receive friends 6:00 - 8:00 pm Friday at Munden Funeral Home.
