Dorothy Campbell

October 28, 1928 — September 16, 2010

Dorothy Campbell, 81, of Raleigh, died Thursday, September 16, 2010.

A graveside service will be held 11 am Tuesday at Greenwood Cemetery in Morehead City with Rev. C. KIing Cole officiating.

Dot, sometimes called Dot Marie, was born in Durham, NC to Dorothy and Thomas Gallagher. She spent her early childhood years in North Carolina and later moved to Norfolk, VA. After graduating from Maury High School, she attended Hollins College.

She was the first secretary in the emergency room at old Rex Hospital on St. Mary?s Street. She served in the position of office manager for a Raleigh thoracic surgeon, and later for an ear, nose, and throat practice.

She will be remembered for her love of children and people in general. She became guardian for five children, Vince, Vaughan, Kelly, Kyle, and Jeannie, and treated them as her own. She stayed in contact with them throughout her lifetime and watched them mature and have their own children.

Dot square danced for many years with her husband, Bill. The friendships she formed through dancing became The Over The Hill Gang. She had a special group of female friends called the Lunch Bunch. All of her friends and family will sorely miss her.

She is survived by her husband, William V. Campbell of Raleigh, a sister, Helen Wozniak of Suffolk, VA, a daughter, Patricia Sheppard of Beaufort, NC; five grandchildren, Chapin Campbell of Chapel Hill, NC, John Kooman of Tampa, FL, Christina Keesecker, Camille Vaughan, both of Virginia Beach, VA, Robert Rodgers of Leesburg, VA, and three great-grandchildren, Mae Keesecker, Finn Keesecker, and Campbell Vaughan, all of Virginia Beach, VA.

She was preceded in death by her son, David Campbell.

The family will receive friends 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm Monday, September 20th, at Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City. A memorial service will be held 2:00 pm September 24th at Saint Michael?s Episcopal Church in Raleigh.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donation may be made to St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 1520 Canterbury Road, Raleigh, NC 27608, or St. Labre Indian School, PO Box 216, Ashland, MT 59003.
