Doris was born on May 5, 1936, in Morehead City, NC, to the late Ralph and Annie Temple. She spent her formative years in Harlowe, where she was an active member of Harlowe United Methodist Church before transferring her membership to St. James United Methodist Church in Newport, where she worshipped faithfully for over 60 years.
At the young age of 17, Doris married her sweetheart, James “Jimmy June” Edwards, and together they created a beautiful life while raising two wonderful daughters. Known for her exceptional organizational skills, Doris enjoyed a fulfilling career as a bookkeeper, contributing her talents to the St. James United Methodist Thrift Store and Hibbs Furniture and Carpet World. Her dedication to her work was evident, and she always approached her responsibilities with excellence.
In 1969, Doris founded the Newport Developmental Center, an organization dedicated to providing therapeutic day services and education for children with disabilities. Her passion for helping others was the driving force behind the center's success, and her heart truly shaped its mission.
Doris cherished her free time, delighting in cooking and being well known for her delicious coconut cake. Living on the coast, she took advantage of every opportunity to go fishing which was one of her favorite hobbies. Known for her love of the color white, she even chose to furnish her home with white carpet which created a bright and welcoming atmosphere.
Above all, Doris was a woman who poured her heart and soul into everything she did, embodying the spirit of dedication and love in all aspects of her life. Her memory will live on in the hearts of those she touched.
Those remaining to cherish her memory are her loving daughters, June L. Edwards and Jessica L. Edwards, both of Newport, and grandson, Dylan Thomas Ring of Newport.
In addition to her parents, Doris was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James Luther “Jimmy June” Edwards in 2006, and siblings, Blanche Temple Merrill, Lloyd Temple, Thomas Temple, and Jessie Temple.
