Donald Ray Messer, 79, of Havelock, North Carolina, passed away on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, at Carolina East Medical Center.
Donald was born on July 25, 1945, in Bimble, Kentucky, to the late Ellis Messer and Mable Lewis Messer. He was a proud veteran who served in the United Air Force from 1964 to 1968, dedicating himself to his country during the Vietnam War.
Following military service, Donald embarked on a dedicated career with Philadelphia Electric Company, where he worked tirelessly until his well-deserved retirement in 1995. Throughout his over 30-year tenure, he forged lifelong friendships that enriched his life. Donald later moved to North Carolina, where he found fulfillment in a second career at the New Bern Airport.
In his leisure time, Donald found joy in the simple pleasures of life. Whether he was fishing, soaking up the sun at the beach, engaging in a round of bowling, or cheering on Penn State football, he embraced each moment with enthusiasm. His fondness for the movie "A Christmas Story" was a testament to his warm and joyful spirit.
Those remaining to cherish his memory are his daughter, Jodi Katz (Jim) and their children, Caroline and Shamus; son, Jeffrey Messer (Kathy) and their son Josh; brother, Rondall Messer; special niece, Rhonda Haynes (Michael) and their children, Taylor, Jesse and Evan; and special friends, Jim Berryhill, and Dan and Mary Henris.
In addition to his parents, Donald was preceded in death by his brother, Russell Messer, and nephew, Randy Messer.
As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to the Gary Sinise Foundation to help with Veterans suffering from PTSD and addiction, P.O. Box 40726, Nashville, TN 37204.
