Donald "Don" Coats

Donald "Don" Coats, 90, of Beaufort, North Carolina, passed away on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, at Carteret Health Care.

A memorial service for Don will be held at Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City, details will be shared once finalized.

Don was born on July 31, 1933, in Johnston County, NC, to the late James Malcom and Carra Belle Wallace Coats. 

Don Coats spent most of his life as a charter boat captain, which he truly loved and devoted many long hours on the sea. Don was one of the original crew and remaining captains of the Morehead City Waterfront and was well respected by his fellow seamen and friends. He was a devoted father and husband and hardworking man for the majority of his life.

Those remaining to cherish his memory is his loving and only child, his daughter, Donna Riley Coats of New Bern, NC; and nephews, Mike Coats, Tony Coats, and Ken Coats of Smithfield, NC, and Chris Coats of Beaufort, NC now residing in the Philippines.

In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Eva Iris Coats; siblings, Ray Coats of Beaufort, NC, James Coats and Arah Lee Coats of Smithfield, NC and Ida Coats Lewis and her son James Al Alonza Lewis, both of Harkers Island, NC.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Colonial Capital Humane Society, 1860 Old Airport Rd, New Bern, NC 28562.
