Derryl Garner, 85, of Newport, went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, December 3, 2017 at the Crystal Coast Hospice House in Newport.

His funeral service will be held Thursday, December 7, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Newport Baptist Church, officiated by Dr. Gary Carroll and Reverend Jack Bowen. Interment will follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Newport.

Derryl was born on August 7, 1932, in the “forks of Newport”.  He grew up to love the town of Newport and to serve it as Mayor for 36 years.

Derryl graduated from the Apprentice School and went on to retire with 42 years of government service at MCAS Cherry Point as Systems Safety Manager.

During his time as Mayor he served on many boards and committees which included: Rotary District Governor (‘74-’75), President of the Neuse River COG, President (’92-’93), (and Lifetime member) of the NC League of Municipalities. He served on the State Ports Committee, President of Newport Little League, Past Master of Newport Masonic Lodge and was actively involved with Allies in Defense of Cherry Point’s Tomorrow. A complete accounting of all his activities would be too lengthy to list, but his desire was to preserve and protect the economic and social fabric of this area.

Derryl loved his Lord and Newport Baptist Church where he was a long-time member and servant. He loved his family, his town and people in general. As a child he taught himself to play the guitar, loved good food and funny stories, good singing, and he was a man many called “friend”.

Derryl is survived by his wife of 62 years and love of his life, Jane Mitchell Garner of the home; daughter, Julie Hathaway and son in law, Todd of Hope Mills; son, M. Kyle Garner of Beaufort; half-sister, Geneva Ward of Newport; and half-brother, Donnie Ward of Beaufort. He leaves behind many nephews and nieces who were precious to him.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, December 6, 2017 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Newport Baptist Church.

Flowers are welcome, or donations can be made in his memory to: Newport Baptist Church (Building Fund), P.O. Box 1330, Newport, NC 28570; Crystal Coast Hospice House, 100 Big Rock Weigh, Newport, NC 28570; or Carteret Health Care Foundation, P.O. Box 1619, Morehead City, NC 28557.
