Derenda “Penny” Fleener, 74, of Harkers Island, passed away Tuesday, January 8, 2019, at Vidant Medical Center.
Penny was locally and affectionately known as the “bird lady”. She loved nurturing injured birds back to health and especially enjoyed raising Cockatiels. In the early 80’s she had the joy and privilege of living in the A-Frame cottage on Cape Lookout where she served as a caretaker.
She is survived by her significant other, Captain Ed Carter of the home; and her dear friend of over 50 years, Ginger Larsen of Lake Hopatcong, NJ.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Captain Ed Fleener; mother, Dolly Cozine; and father, John Henry Wilhelm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Cedar Island National Wildlife Refuge at Mattamuskeet Rd., Swan Quarter, NC 27885.
