Dennis Pittman

January 11, 1919 — February 14, 2012

Dennis Pittman, 93, of Bar Mills, ME, went to be with his Lord on February 14, 2012, while wintering in Atlantic Beach, NC.  Born January 11, 1919, in Stacy, NC, the second son of Andrew and Martha Nelson Pittman, Dennis was blessed to be part of a loving extended family.  Educated in Stacy and Atlantic schools, he joined the Civil Conservation Corps during the Great Depression working at Lake Mattamuskeet and the Dismal Swamp.  As a young man, he fished commercially with his and many other Down East seafaring families and later joined the US Coast Guard.   While serving in the Coast Guard during WWII, he survived the attack and sinking of the Alexander Hamilton off the coast of Iceland.  He, as well as Hugh Salter, Nathan Robinson, and others of Carteret County were rescued by local fisherman.
While stationed in Portland, ME, Dennis married Julia A. Blackwell of Portland and was welcomed into the Woodbury and Blackwell families.  After WWII, he worked for N.T. Fox Lumber and the Portland Housing Authority, retiring as a Director at the age of 60.  Raising their family in Portland, he and Julia enjoyed 44 years of marriage until her death in 1987.  In 1988, Dennis married Alice J. Fournier and appreciated sharing 18 years together until her death in 2003.
As a devout believer in Jesus Christ, he was very active in the church evangelism community in Portland.  During the 1950’s, he and Ben Lyons started the Sagamore Sunday School.  A member of the First Baptist Church in Portland, he also served as Deacon, Trustee, and Education and Missions committee member.  In retirement he enjoyed serving as a boy’s counselor and kitchen staff member at church camp, visiting the church family, teaching Bible Study at Canco Woods, and serving in the Food Pantry.
Dennis was preceded in death by his eldest daughter, Damaris K Robinson, and brothers, Norvey, Elbert, Ralph, and Andrew Pittman.  He is survived by his sister, Martha P. Hancock of Stacy; a brother, Larry C. Pittman of Beaufort, NC; a daughter, Martha P. Robertson, with whom he resided; and a son, Dennis J. Pittman of Lisbon Falls, ME.  He is also survived by grandchildren, John Lee Robinson and his wife Wendy of Stacy,  Serina R. Kannan and her husband Patrick of Morehead City, NC, Jonathan G. Robertson and his wife Deanne of Biddeford, ME, Stephen P. Robertson and his wife Lori of Hollis, ME, Scott A. Robertson of Brunswick, ME, and Benjamin B. Robertson of Bar Mills.  Also surviving are great-grandchildren, Emilee and Ashlyn Robinson, and Caleb, Rachel, Rebekah, Joshua, David, and Lydia Robertson.  He also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.  He is also survived by his step-children, Carol Rivera of Florida, Linda Ward and Dora Cain of Windham, ME, Cecile Champagne  and Catherine Leo of Portland, and John McDivitt of Newport, ME, and their families.
Family and friends are invited to a time of visitation from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17, 2012, at Stacy Freewill Baptist Church, Route 70 East, Stacy.  The memorial service will be held Saturday, Feb 18, at 2 p.m. at the Stacy church with Rev. Ernest Laxton officiating.  Interment will be in Stacy Community Cemetery following.  A celebration of Mr. Pittman’s life will be held at the First Baptist Church of Portland, ME at a later date.
