Debbie Smith, 71, of Beaufort, North Carolina, passed away on Monday, July 29, 2024, at Carteret Health Care.

A celebration of Debbie’s life will be held at the family home. Service details will be shared once finalized.

Debbie was born on September 4, 1952, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to the late Jim Mabrey and Margaret Ball. She pursued her education at Penn State University and Temple University, obtaining her bachelor's degree. Debbie's professional journey led her to a successful career in the healthcare sector. In 1981, she made Carteret County her home and embarked on a meaningful tenure at Sea Level Hospital. Debbie later contributed her skills to Carteret General Hospital before concluding her noteworthy career as a Phlebotomist at Carteret Health Department.

Even in retirement, Debbie's work ethic remained unwavering. She embraced new opportunities by joining the NC Board of Elections and the Carteret County Recycling Center on Highway 101. Her commitment to service continued to shine brightly in every role she undertook.

Beyond her professional endeavors, Debbie found joy in various hobbies. Crocheting and sewing were among her favorites, reflecting her creativity and meticulous attention to detail. Additionally, she cherished moments of adventure through travel and RVing.

Those remaining to cherish her memory are her son, Khary Smith and wife Teresa of Swansboro, NC; sister, Barbara Erwin of Jacksonville, FL; brother, John “Sandy” Thomas of Philadelphia, PA; grandchildren, Mallory Leake of Hubert and Zackery Smith of Beaufort; and her faithful companion, her dog, Ollie.

In addition to her parents, Debbie was preceded in death by her twin brother, Donald Mabrey.
