David Gresham Mason of Beaufort, North Carolina, formerly of Indian Head, Maryland died Friday, November 16, 2012 at home. He is survived by his two daughters, Melissa Mason Lawton and her husband, Rodger of Olympia, Washington and Meredith Mason Elrod and her husband, Rob of Brandywine, Maryland and four grandchildren. He is also survived by his two brothers, Jonathan L. Mason and his wife, Lorraine of Wilmington and Roy L. Mason and his wife. Paula of Severna Park, Maryland, many nephews and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents Evelyn Willis Mason and Merle Gresham Mason.
He was born June 21, 1943 in LaPlata, Maryland. He graduated from Lackey High School class of 1961, attended Charles County Community College and graduated from the University of Maryland in 1974. He completed the apprenticeship program, and subsequently worked as a machinist and tool maker at the Naval Ordinance Station in Indian Head. He then worked for many years at the Washington Navy Yard and NAVAIR as a project manager for several defense programs. In the late 1980’s he fulfilled a lifelong dream to move to Eastern North Carolina and built a home on the Intracoastal Waterway. He retired from Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point in 2002 and spent his later years working for Carteret County Parks and Recreation and had his own lawn business.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time on the water. He was an avid history buff, specifically the civil war. He adored his grandchildren, Alexa, Tristan, and Carina Elrod and Kallie Kidder.
