David Ellis Willis

David Ellis Willis, 70, of Beaufort, died Thursday, March 10, 2011 at Carteret General Hospital.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 pm Saturday at Munden Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Dennis Goodwin officiating.

Mr. Willis was born on December 6, 1940 in Morehead City, NC to David Thomas Willis and Irene Gray Willis. He graduated from Morehead City High School and Campbell University. After graduating from college he taught at Harkers Island School for five years. He loved his students and until his death enjoyed seeing them. He always spoke fondly of them.

He then ran the family business, EJW Outdoors, until his retirement in 1985. David opened his live bait business after retirement and enjoyed catching and selling live bait to all the King Mackerel Fisherman. His life as an outdoorsman was well known by all who knew him. It was not unusual to see him, his dog, and Billy each and every day, selling his wares.

David loved Carteret County and was proud of it. His passing is indeed a loss to all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife, Sandi Willis; a daughter, Darla Harrell and husband, Arlen of Newport; a son, David Thomas Willis, II and wife, Hope of Morehead City; grandchildren, Michael Locklear, Morgan C. Willis, and Maggie Gray Harrell; and his special friend, Bud.

The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.
