Danièle Johnson 61, of Cedar Island died suddenly on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at home.
The family and church will conduct a memorial service at 2:00 pm Thursday at the Cedar Island United Methodist Church. She will be interred at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.
Danièle was born in Brussels, Belgium and lived in Belgium and Italy which honed her fabulous cooking skills. She met husband Steve in Brussels in 1983 and immigrated to the US and became a citizen. She established and ran a very popular restaurant, Le Bistrot Belgique Gourmande, in Occoquan, Northern Virginia for 11 years. Many friends and family grew up working in or dining in the restaurant and, with new owners, it still exists and continues to show off her creativity and love for friends and fine food. The biggest legacy of her Bistrot was the many young friends of Claire’s that worked for her that she tutored and guided through their teen years. Is there another restaurant that would close so the Chef could attend her “kid’s” graduations?
Danièle later established a very popular vacation rental on Cedar Island that is noted for its imaginative décor and welcome acceptance of animals. In addition to being a gourmet chef, she was fluent in 3 languages, an avid reader and loved to travel in the family RV, especially when Grandson Eli was aboard.
She is survived by her husband of 30 years, Steve; Daughter Claire and Grandson Eli of Richmond VA; Step-daughter Kathy of Alexandria, VA; Step-son Luther of Monument, Colorado; Mother Lilly of Brussels; and Brother Claude of Antibes, France.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Cedar Island United Methodist Church, 2943 Cedar Island Rd. Cedar Island, NC 28520.
