Curvis Lee Guthrie, Sr. was born in Potter?s Hospital on Front Street in Beaufort, on March 19, 1929. He
was one of five children born to Martin Luther and Lettie Willis Guthrie.
E, as he was called, married the love of his life, Betty Lou Dowty, on January 2, 1951. From this union, two
sons were born, Curvis Lee Guthrie, Jr. and Walter Maurice Guthrie.
Three days after their marriage, on January 5, 1951, E was called to duty to serve his country in the Army
during the Korean Conflict. While his father and brothers served in the Coast Guard during different periods, E decided not to join freely and was therefore drafted by the Army. E decided not to join the Coast Guard because he was not fond of boats and prone to sea sickness. However, after his training, the Army placed him on a boat at Fort Eustis, Virginia. He remained on the boat until his discharge.
After his years in the Army, E returned home to Harkers Island. He spent a few years fishing, but found his true love was in the building of boats. He worked for Julian Guthrie in Williston and then for Bock Marine in Core Creek.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Tuesday at Harkers Island United Methodist Church with the Rev. Brad Williams officiating. Interment will follow at Victoria Cemetery.
