Cornelius "Buck" Jones

Cornelius “Buck” Jones, 85, of Newport, NC, passed away on Sunday, December 15, 2024, at Carteret Health Care.

A funeral service to honor Buck’s life will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, December 19 at Refuge Fellowship Church in Harkers Island, officiated by Rev. Manley Rose. Interment will follow at Vergie Mae Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Buck was born on November 22, 1939, in Harkers Island, NC, to the late George and Bernice Jones. A beloved member of Refuge Fellowship Church, Buck lived his life guided by his deep connection to God, his family, and the sea. Born and raised on Harkers Island, he was a true islander through and through, embracing its traditions and culture. Buck spent his life on the water as a commercial fisherman. He was happiest with a fishing net in hand and a plate of fresh seafood to share with loved ones, especially mullet roe, his favorite.

Buck never met a stranger and was known for his kindness. He embodied love and respect for everyone. His family was his greatest treasure, and he cherished every moment spent with them.

Those remaining to cherish his memory are his sisters, Betty Lawrence of Newport, NC, Daisy Rennwald (John) of Beaufort, NC; brother, Elbert Jones (Joyce) of Harkers Island, NC; stepdaughter, Crystal Piner of Kinston, NC; stepsons, William Piner of Harkers Island, Ivey Piner (Paula) of Tusk, NC, and Dennis Piner (Cathy) of Morehead City, NC; 5 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Buck was preceded in death by his loving wife, Jean Jones, and daughter, Angie Guthrie.
