Constance “Connie” Gwendolyn Bocker, 86, of Newport, passed away Friday, June 22, 2018 at Carteret Health Care.
Constance peacefully left her earthly bonds to join her husband Peter in heaven. Born to Glendora and Ernest Johnson in Torrance, California, her Dad was a merchant sea captain who sailed during the first half of the 20th century. Raised during the depression, she did not suffer as many did because of her father’s job. She met our dad, a merchant marine, and eloped to be married in Las Vegas in 1952.
Moving around the country, Connie followed her husband Pete giving birth to four children along the way, Peter, Cathy, Bruce and Dale, she consistently made each location a home that was secure, stable and loving. We ultimately settled in New Jersey when Dad was transferred to the union’s national office in New York City. It was here she was left with the task of raising the four of us while Dad pursued his career which involved a great deal of travel. Our Mom did a wonderful job as we all were a handful in the fifties, sixties and early seventies. Connie was an active member of her community where she volunteered and received an award, from the then Governor of North Carolina James B. Hunt, for Outstanding Volunteer Service for the Sea Level Extended Care Facility Auxiliary, where she served as President. She also was appointed by the Carteret County Board of Commissioners as a member of the Carteret County Nursing Home Advisory Board.
She is survived by her son Peter and his wife, Kathleen, of Newport; daughter Catherine Lade and her husband, Stephen, of St Petersburg, Florida; son Bruce and his wife, Bonnie, of Charlotte; and son Dale and his wife, Christine, of Newport; and her sister Caroline of San Pedro, California. She has 9 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. She attended St. James UMC of Newport, NC. A private celebration of her life was held in the chapel of Munden’s Funeral Home Sunday June 24th.
