Coach George "Sandy" Kinney

Coach George "Sandy" Kinney, 79 of Atlantic Beach, North Carolina, passed away on Saturday, October 30, 2021.

A private graveside service will take place at Gethsemane Memorial Park.

Coach Sandy Kinney was born on November 3, 1941, in Atlanta, Georgia to the late Alfred and George Kinney.  Honorably serving in the Air National Guard, Coach Sandy Kinney was a proud patriot to his country.  Football was in his blood from an early age as well as basketball and baseball.  His athletic ability, determination, and passion for sports became his life work.  As a University of North Carolina Alumni, he was honored to play College Football there GO HEELS!  He also played Semi-Pro Football for the Charlotte Vikings!  Recognizing his skill and love of the game, he went on to coach College Football at the University of North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest University, and Western Carolina University.  He also Coached Football at several High Schools including Mount Tabor High School and Havelock High School.  Over the span of 43 years, he influenced not only the game, but also numerous of young men and coaches who looked to him for guidance and support!

Even with all of his football accolades, his family will remember him as a loving husband of over 50 years, a great father, a leader, and an excellent grandfather!  He loved walking on the beach collecting sea glass, grilling meals for his family, playing a great round of golf, and watching the stock market!  He also loved reading the newspaper and watching sports!

He is survived by his loving wife, Sondra Jane Peabody Kinney; daughter, Lacey Jane Kinney; sons, George Sandifer Kinney III and Bruce Kinney; and grandchildren, Andrew Brice Stewart, Calista Jane Lossiah, and Jaden Daniel, Kinney.
