Christy “The Boss” Sanders, age 75, of Jacksonville, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, at her home. She was preceded in death by her parents, 3 sisters, 1 brother, and 1 son.
Christy was born on July 7, 1948, in Forks, Washington to the late John and Velma O’Neill. Her father was a logger, so she grew up traveling from state to state which provided many interesting childhood memories. She and her siblings often referred to themselves as hillbillies while growing up.
She married her first husband, a Marine, at age 16 and had 2 children before she was twenty. Eventually, they moved to Texas, and it was there that she learned to sew and realized she was very good at it. She made children’s clothes and denim purses which she sold to local shops. Then she became well known in her community for making costumes for kids and adults alike. A talent that kept her smiling as she created them all from her own imagination.
After many years in Texas, she was able to go home to the West Coast and landed in Oregon to be near her siblings. There she met and married her second husband, her soul mate, Bobby and together they enjoyed a blended family and then became foster parents caring for countless children over the years and adopting 3 sweet kids as their own. Their family was now complete.
After retirement, she and Bobby embarked on a new chapter in life and decided to migrate to North Carolina three years ago to be near her oldest daughter, grandchildren, and great grandkids not to mention a warmer coastal climate. Over the last three years she lovingly crocheted blankets for grandchildren and for the elderly in Assisted Living, became a sourdough bread master, and even took up painting. To the end, she was always learning new things, offering what she had to others, and loving her family to a fault.
Christy will forever be remembered as an extraordinary woman whose kindness, love, and creativity inspired all who knew her. She is survived by 8 children, 28 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren.
