Chester "Chet" Lykins

August 18, 1930 — September 23, 2012

Chester (Chet) Gerald Lykins died peacefully, Sunday Sept. 23, 2012 at 5:40pm, at Carteret General Hospital, Morehead City, North Carolina. Chet was 82yrs old and resided at 131 W. Witten Circle, Havelock, NC at the time of his death.

A funeral service will be held 10:00 am Saturday at The Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints in Havelock, NC.

Chet was born at home near Columbus, IN on Aug. 18, 1930; he was the eighth of nine children born to Noah Lee Lykins & Della Fugit Eckert. His siblings were Ernest, Avonell (Lawrence Newsom), Olive (Willard Perry), Ruby (Del White), James, Carolyn (Dick O'Sullivan), Earl, & Janet Sue (Meier).
He graduated from Columbus High School in 1948 and Brigham Young Univ in 1958 with a BS degree in Agriculture. Chet served a mission for the LDS church from 1950-52 in the Central States Mission, which he enjoyed very much. He served in the Army from 1953-55. He married Amy Jean Buhrer and they had seven children: Spring (Ken Parsons), Jeanice (Robert Ames), Suzanna (Myron Guy), Hans (Kathy Martin), Gerry (Anne Comstock), Jana (Kirk Kleinhenz), and Christopher (deceased). Chet lost his left arm in a cornpicker accident on his father's farm in Dec, 1955. Farming was his first choice as a profession; he had even obtained a degree in Agriculture to better prepare him for life as a farmer, but after the accident he felt that door was permanently closed to him. He worked at various jobs to support his family including a position with the US government in agriculture; parole officer w/ the IN Dept of Corrections; long-distance truck driver for England Trucking, and Werner Trucking from which he retired in 1995.

He married Jill Arthea Hoke on Feb. 9, 1998; they were sealed in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints temple in Raleigh, NC for Time & All Eternity the next year. His step-children are Penny (Richard Callaway) and Wendy (John Gregory).

Chet is preceded by his parents, eight siblings, one son, and one grandchild, Jennifer Ames. He is survived by his wife, Jill; ex-wife, Jean; six children; twenty-one grandchildren; eleven step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.

Chet was a life long member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon Church) and held many leadership and teaching positions throughout his life, giving service wherever and whenever he was asked. He was a loving husband, a devoted father, and a faithful disciple of Christ.

Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 Friday at the Church.
