Charles Sterling Hancock, Jr.

Charles Sterling Hancock, Jr., 72, of Beaufort, passed away Saturday, August 18­, 2018, at Carteret Health Care.

His funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, August 21, 2018, at Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City, officiated by Rev. Bill Hooper and Rev. Reggie Etheridge. Interment will follow at Carteret Memorial Gardens.

Sterling was born and raised in the Otway community and graduated high school from Smyrna High School, Class of 1963. He briefly attended East Carolina College before joining the Carteret County Tax Office as the appointed Assessor. He owned and operated Hancock Realty before his time as Tax Assessor for Pender County, Johnston County, and Bertie County where he retired from  in 2006. Sterling enjoyed reading, history and coaching youth sports. Retirement afforded him the opportunity to spend time with family who he loved dearly.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Karen Hancock, of the home; son, Jonathan “Jon” Hancock and wife, Tammy, of Winston-Salem, NC; sister, Barbara Daniels and husband, Edwin, of Otway, NC; grandchildren, Josh Hancock and wife, Emily, of Greensboro, NC and Jacob Hancock of Winston-Salem, NC; and many loving nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Edna Hancock and brother, Tony Hancock.

Family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, August 20, 2018, at Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City.
