Charles Monroe Gilgo, 75, of Atlantic, passed away Thursday, October 19, 2017 at his home.

His funeral service will be held Sunday, October 22, 2017 at 2 p.m. at Atlantic United Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. Jack Colenda and Rev. Terry McInnis. Interment will follow at Over the Brook Cemetery in Atlantic.

Charles was a dedicated man of the Atlantic community. He retired, last year, from the Atlantic Fire Department where he was pleased to serve those around him. He served on both the Fire Department Board and the Cemetery Fund Board of Directors. He took great pride in participating in the annual pig picking fundraiser for the Cemeteries in the Community.  He also helped his girls with softball and taught many a young man about fishing. He was always there to give a hand to help.

Charles left home, as a young man, to work as a fisherman in Louisana. He remained there 8 years working on a pogie boat. He returned home and worked for Clayton Fulcher Seafood as Captain of the Harry Michael and then purchased his own boat and was captain of the MV Ann and Lisa.

He is survived by loving wife, Mildred Gilgo of the home; daughters, Ann and husband Gary Dean, Jr. of Havelock, Lisa Lewis of Bettie; sisters, Sandra Scott of Harkers Island, Rita Harris of Atlantic, Bertha Hill of Atlantic; brothers, Lionel Gilgo of Beaufort, Joseph W. Gilgo of Atlantic; grandchildren, Amanda Willis, Allison Fulcher and husband, Johnathan, Grayson Lewis; and great-grandchildren, Brooklyn and Joslyn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lionel and Emma Gilgo, son-in-law, Gray Lewis, Jr.

Family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, October 21, 2017 at Atlantic United Methodist Church.

Flowers are welcome or memorials can be made to the Cemetery Fund in care of Brenda Lowdermilk at 133 Lee Daniels Road, Atlantic, NC 28511 or to a church of one’s choice.
