Charles Wayne Maxwell Sr., 88, of Morehead City, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, at the Crystal Coast Hospice House.
A funeral service to honor Wayne’s life will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, February 13th at Munden Funeral Home, officiated by Chaplain Shadrach Barrow. Interment will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Park. The family will receive friends following the graveside service.
Wayne was born on June 24, 1936, in Red Springs, NC, to the late Martin “Mac” and Sara Maxwell. Blessed with 66 years with his sweetheart, he married his beloved wife Faye in 1955. At that time, they lived in Charlotte, where Wayne dedicated five years of his career to Douglas Aircraft before relocating to Carteret County.
Upon moving to the coast, Wayne took a position with the NC Marine Fisheries, a journey that spanned 4 decades until his retirement in 1993. He began his career as an officer in Sea Level in 1961. After being given an opportunity to become a pilot, Wayne and the family moved to Morehead City. He progressed through various roles, ultimately attaining the distinguished title of Senior Pilot. In recognition of his exemplary service, he was honored with the title of Law Enforcement Officer of the Year by the Governor of North Carolina in 1993.
In his golden years, Wayne enjoyed working at Williams Hardware, where his friendly demeanor and extensive knowledge made him a cherished figure among customers for ten years.
Wayne loved the Lord and attended First Presbyterian Church in Morehead City. Living on the coast, he always enjoyed spending time on the water. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He enjoyed traveling, with fond memories of trips to Florida and the scenic mountains. A lover of good food, he always appreciated a tasty meal.
Family was the cornerstone of Wayne's life. He held a deep love for his wife, Faye, and took great pride in his sons, enjoying time spent watching them play baseball during their youth. He enjoyed spending time with his granddaughters and even entertained them when they were young by playing dress-up with them.
Wayne's character was defined by honor and hard work, embodying the values he upheld throughout his life. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Those remaining to cherish his memory are his sons, Charles Wayne “Chuck” Maxwell Jr. of Morehead City, NC and Christopher “Scott” Maxwell and wife Christi of Beaufort, NC; grandchildren, Sydney Maxwell McKenzie and husband Brit of Rogers, AR and Caitlin Maxwell Bostwick and husband Hunter of Cary, NC; and great grandchildren, John Brittain McKenzie Jr., Palmer Grace McKenzie, Thomas Winfield McKenzie, Barnes Alexander McKenzie, Jackson Wade Bostwick, and William Hudson Bostwick,
In addition to his parents, Wayne was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara Faye Maxwell who passed away in 2021; sister, Lynda Gayle Foxworthy; brother and sister-in-law, James Michael and Lea Maxwell; daughter-in-law, Linda Mae Maxwell; great grandchild, Medad McKenzie.
