Charles Kellum

C.T. "Captain Tom" Kellum, 87, of Morehead City, died Sunday, March 7, 2010 at his home.

Tom spent his life on the water, building, repairing, and running boats. His favorite leisure activity was taking family and friends on a boat ride. He spent the better part of his career as Captain of the tug "Patricia" for Willis Towing and Barge Lines, working previously for many years as Skipper of the UNC Institute of Marine Sciences research vessel "Machapunga".He served his country during World War II, and was active in the town of Morehead City as a member, and volunteer Assistant Chief for the Town of Morehead City Volunteer Fire Department. He was a 55- year member of St. Egberts Parish, where, in his younger years, he volunteered many hours to build and maintain its facilities.

A funeral mass will be held 10:00 am Wednesday St. Egberts Catholic Church with Father Doug Smiley officiating.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jane Kirschner Kellum; four daughters, Laura Gillikin and husband Jesse of Mooresville, Maggie Chalk and husband Skinner of Morehead City, Mary Docherty of Morehead City, and Gina Murray and husband Pat of Cincinnati, OH; two sons, Ziba Kellum and wife Amy of Durham and Tom Kellum and wife Vicky of Palm Harbor, FL; 12 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son, Walter Francis Kellum.

The family will receive friends following the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Egberts Parish, 1706 Evans St., Morehead City, NC 28557.
