Catherine Elizabeth McKnight
Chapel Hill
Catherine McKnight, 62, of Chapel Hill, died Saturday June 9, 2012. Cathy was a life-long resident of Chapel Hill and took pride in being a “townie.” She graduated from Chapel Hill High and attended her beloved UNC-Chapel Hill; she was a volunteer for Switchboard, Access and the Orange County Rape Crisis Center at different times in her life. Cathy will be remembered as being a very strong person who took pride in overcoming the problems associated with her early Type I diabetes and being a fast friend to many in the area. Cathy loved animals (her Golden Retrievers and horses especially), the beach, playing piano and reading. Her memory for what mattered most was long and she used it to celebrate large and small milestones in her friends’ and family’s lives. Her sense of humor remained as sharp as ever and she could tell a spectacular joke.
Cathy was the second daughter of the late William Albert McKnight and Catherine Hodges McKnight. She is survived by her husband, Jefferson R. Surles, her sister, Norva M. Bounds and husband Michael F. Bounds of Cedar Point, North Carolina and her niece, Gwendolyn M. Bounds and wife Lisa L. Bernhard, of Garrison, New York. Special thanks go to Brenda Cotton, her caregiver for the last five years, who helped her in so many ways.
A ceremony of remembrance will be held at a later date. Contributions may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation or a charity of your choice.
