Catherine Gaskill Fulcher, 97, of Sea Level, died Thursday, January 27, 2011 at Taylor Extended Care Facility, Sea Level following a long decline.
Services will be held 2:00 pm Saturday in Munden Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Paul Harris officiating. Interment will follow at Carteret Memorial Gardens in Beaufort.
A native of Sea Level, she was born October 16, 1913, the daughter of Eugene and Nellie Styron Gaskill. Before her illness, she lived in the Stacy Community and was a dedicated member of Stacy United Methodist Church, serving as pianist for many years.
A graduate of East Carolina Teachers College, she later earned her Masters Degree in early education, also from East Carolina. Her teaching career, spanning 40 years, began at the Freewill Baptist Orphanage in Middlesex, NC, then at Dudley in Wayne County, briefly at Sea Level and several years at Beaufort Elementary.
On July 3rd, 1954, she was married to Sterling Fulcher of Stacy, and her teaching then followed his career assignments in the US Coast Guard to Portsmouth, VA, Washington, NC and Cape May, NJ. When he retired in 1966, they returned home to Stacy, and she resumed teaching at Beaufort Elementery, retiring in 1975.
Mrs. Fulcher is survived by her brother, Robert G. Gaskill and wife, Nancy of Morehead City; nephew, Thomas Glenn Gaskill of Norfolk, VA, and niece, Katherine Gaskill Poindexter and husband, Keith of Chesapeake, VA.
Catherine and Sterling were married 38 years until his death in 1992. Also preceding her in death were her parents, Eugene and Nellie Styron Gaskill; brothers, Eugene L. Gaskill and Paul M. Gaskill and his wife, Barbara.
Her family expresses deep appreciation to Dr. Walter Wardell and the staff of Taylor Extended Care, particularly the East Wing, for her excellent care. We will be forever grateful to her daily companions for their loving and dedicated care, particularly: Janie Pittman, Diana Wright, Colleen Krupa, Alice Day, Fran Smith, Angela Hamilton, and others of the earlier years.
The family will receive friends during her viewing one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
