Carlton "Cotty" Thompson, 85, loving husband, father and Pop Pop passed away peacefully on June 10, 2016, at his home in Morehead City after a short battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his  family at the time of his passing.

A funeral service will be held 2:00 pm Friday, June 17, 2016 at First Presbyterian Church in Morehead City with Rev. Tim Havlicek officiating. Interment will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Park.

Born and raised in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Jack E. Thompson and Maggie Coley Thompson.

Cotty began his career with Carolina Telephone after serving in the Navy from 1951-1955.  He was the first man hired to sell Yellow Page advertising for Carolina Telephone, his career advanced through the years to district commercial manager.  Nearly 23 of his 38 years with the company were spent in Morehead City, NC. Cotty was a Charter Member and served as President of the Rotary Club of Morehead City-Noon in 1984 -85, was a Paul Harris Fellow and Annual Sustaining Member of The Rotary Foundation, was Number 2 in the Badge Box with 45 years of perfect attendance. Cotty was an active member of the Carteret County Chamber of Commerce and received the Chamber Member of the Year in 1988.  He served on the advisory board for the NC Aquarium, was a member of the Morehead City Elks Club, served on the endowment board of Carteret Community College, and he was a member of the Carteret County Economic Development Council where he served as president from 1977-78.  In 1993, Cotty received the Carteret County Distinguished Citizen Award from the Croatan Trails District of Boy Scouts of America.  In his free time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf and cooking.  Cotty was known for his famous homemade chili that was served on numerous occasions throughout the year for elected officials and law enforcement officers.  Cotty was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Morehead City.

He is survived by his daughter, Elana McClure and husband Joey of Morehead City; son, Scott Thompson and wife Angie of Apex; grandchildren, Corey Thompson, Madison Thompson, Carlton McClure, Ryan McClure, and Breana McClure.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Gray Thompson; sisters, Geneva Ramsey and Frances Hayes; and brothers, Robert Thompson, Walter Lee Thompson, and Jack “Buddy” Thompson.

The family will receive friends 6:00 – 8:00 pm Thursday at Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City.
