Carlton, born on October 4, 1935, in Beaufort, NC, was the son of the late Cecil and Georgia Lewis. Coming from a family where his father worked hard from a young age to provide for his family, and a mother who knew how to tend the home from a tender age, Carlton learned the value of diligence and commitment, traits he carried throughout his life. Raised during the challenging times of the post-Depression era and World War II, he faced life with resilience, working alongside his father as they moved to various farms across Carteret and Craven Counties.
In 1953, Carlton proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force, demonstrating his love for his country through his military service. He later served in the United States Coast Guard Reserve, building a proud legacy of dedication to his nation. Following his military career, he continued to contribute to society through his work in Quality Assurance within Civil Service.
The joy of Carlton's life began when he met and married his forever love, Edna. Their love was undeniable and when he finally popped the question, she said, “It’s about time”. Their love was a remarkable journey, and Carlton was immensely proud of their family. His children demonstrated honor and integrity and he was always proud of how they conducted themselves with honor.
In his leisure time, Carlton found great satisfaction in tending to his yard, mowing the grass, and taking pleasure in the beauty of his surroundings. A sports enthusiast, he enjoyed immersing himself in the excitement of a good game.
A devoted member of Tuttle's Grove Methodist Church, Carlton's life was deeply rooted in his faith and Christian beliefs. His unwavering love for his family and his strong character defined him. Carlton will be remembered for his kindness, dedication, and the strength he imparted to all who knew him.
Those remaining to cherish his memory are his daughter, Crystal Bailey of Beaufort, NC; son, Carlton McCoy Lewis Jr. (Elizabeth) of Beaufort, NC; sister, Linda Southerland of Ohio; brother, Cecil O’Brien Lewis (Marcia) of New Bern, NC; grandchildren, Lauren Bailey (Rob Bridges) of New Bern, NC, Shana Young (Blake) of Beaufort, NC, and Felicia Taylor of Beaufort; and great-grandson, Dawson McCoy Young.
In addition to his parents, Carlton was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 50 years, Edna Chadwick Lewis, who passed away in 2010.
As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be made to the Crystal Coast Hospice House, P.O. Box 640, Newport, NC 28570.
