Carl Heffelfinger

Dr. Carl John Heffelfinger, Pine Knoll shores, 85, went to be with the Lord on May 26, 2010.

He was born in Rochester, NY. During WWII, he served in the US Army as a medic with the 41st Infantry Division in the South Pacific and later, in Hiroshima. In 1952, he received his PhD in Chemistry from the University of Buffalo. Working for 32 years as a research chemist for E.I. DuPont de Nemours in Circleville, OH, at a research lab and production facility, he helped establish, he was internationally known for his work on polymer films and held six U.S. patents. Following his retirement, from 1985-1999, he consulted with companies around the world and in 1992, he was awarded the Lavoisier Medal for Technical Achievement. He was the director of the Salvation Army Service Unit in Circleville, served on numerous church boards and taught senior high Sunday School.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Saturday, May 29th, at All Saints Anglican Church, 292 McCabe Rd., Newport, NC, 28570. Interment will follow in Gethsemane Memorial Park.

He is survived by his wife, Lois A. Heffelfinger, children, Ann Barnhill and husband , John of Greenville, NC, Sue Shank and husband, David of Cincinnati, OH, and Paul Heffelfinger and wife Suzanne of Beaufort, NC and grandchildren, Richard and Amy Barnhill, Benjamin, Joshua and Evangeline Shank and Elizabeth and Clayton Heffelfinger.

The family will receive friends 6:00 - 8:00 pm Friday at Munden Funeral Home and other times at the home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to All Saints Anglican Church for the purpose of reducing the mortgage debt.
