Capt. Kenneth R. Long, (Retired), 58, of Havelock, passed away Sunday, August 28, 2016 at his home.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 pm Wednesday, August 31, 2016 at Glad Tidings Church with Pastor Tim Marriner officiating.

Captain Long began his law enforcement career at the Atlantic Beach Police Department before he transferred to the Carteret County Sheriff’s Department where he worked as a Detective. He then transferred to the Morehead City Police Department retiring as a Captain. He began the Underwater Search & Rescue Team for both the Sheriff’s Department and the Morehead City Police Department. He also served two terms with the Newport Town Council.

Kenneth was a loving husband of 37 years, father, and grandfather. He was a good friend to many, and his kind spirit touched many people.

He is survived by his wife, Karen Long of the home; three daughters, Mary Kathryn Long of Havelock, Kristin R. Long and fiancé, Thomas Steelman of Zebulon, and Jetta Long of Havelock; son, Kenneth Reid Long, Jr. and wife Misty of Morehead City; father, Luther Long of Zebulon; sister, Lt. Kathy Long (retired) of Henderson; five grandchildren, Kailey Styron, Kiera Long, TJ Price, Gracelyn Long, and Luna Long; and his best friend, Duke.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Glad Tidings Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial cards may be sent to the family in memory of Captain Kenneth Long, 103 Ski Court Havelock, NC 28532.
