Harold Michael Snyder, of Newport, NC, died Friday, November 25, 2016, following a long illness. He was 72.
His funeral service will be held 11:00 am Saturday, December 3, 2016 at Munden Funeral Home Chapel in Morehead City, with Minister James Clark officiating. Interment will follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery.
He was a Marine and an Airman, a preacher and a teacher; he was a father and grandfather.
Born and raised in Panama City, FL, he was a 1961 graduate of Bay County High School.
He was an Air Intelligence Specialist, an Air Support Control Officer, and a Public Affairs Officer at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, NC. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War.
Specializing in Air Intelligence and Photo Interpretation, he served four years in the USAF. As a member of the intelligence community, he investigated alien sightings for Project Blue Book. After his Air Force tour, he attended The Ohio State University, where he earned a B. S. in Journalism (Public Relations) and was the Community Relations Officer at Mansfield (Ohio) General Hospital before joining the Marine Corps in 1972. When he returned from his Westpac tour (Iwakuni), Japan; Okinawa; and the Philippine Islands), he was selected to participate in the Advanced Degree Program of the USMC and again attended The Ohio State University. He graduated from OSU in early 1978 with a Master's Degree in Public Affairs and served at the Joint Public Affairs Officer at MCAS Cherry Point until he was medically retired in 1980. Shortly after he retired, he began preaching the gospel and continued for 24 years among the churches of Christ, particularly those in North Carolina. In the late 1980s, he attended East Carolina University and earned a Master of Arts Degree in Technical Communication and was on the faculty of the Department of English at ECU for 16 years before he retired in 2008.
Hal is survived by his wife, Mary; his two sons Michael and Mark Snyder; a granddaughter, Meaghan Snyder; and his younger brother, Richard Snyder, of AL.
He is preceded in death by his older brother, John, and his parents, Harry & Mary Snyder (of Panama City).
The family will receive friends 6:00 – 8:00 pm Friday, December 2, 2016 at Munden Funeral Home.
