Captain Daniel W. Richards, 87, of Morehead City, passed away Thursday, June 7, 2018 at Vidant Medical Center.
His memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 10, 2018 at All Saints Church in Newport, officiated by Rev. John Grayson. Interment, with military honors, will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Park.
Daniel was the son of Mabel Whang Richards and adoptive father, Herman Richards. He was born on August 13, 1930 in Honolulu, Hawaii. He graduated from McKinley High, Class of 1948 and joined the United States Marine Corps in 1951 where he became a Naval Aviator.
Dan spent most of his career on the east coast at Marine Corps Air Station, Cherry Point, NC. He did two tours of duty in Vietnam where he earned the distinguished Flying Cross, The Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry and numerous other awards including three Top Gun awards.
He retired in 1973 to Morehead City, NC where he has been a part of the community. Dan was an avid golfer and was on the board of the Morehead City Country Club where he has been a member since 1965.
He was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church and All Saints Anglican Church.
He is survived by his wife, Greta McCurry Richards, formerly of Asheville, NC, and son, Jeffrey Richards of Asheville, NC.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Mabel Richards and daughter, Danielle Richards.
Family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 10, 2018 at All Saints Church in Newport.
