Buford (Smokey) H. Stover, 90, of Knightdale passed away Thursday September 29, 2011 at his home in Knightdale.

Buford was born December 10, 1920 to Commodore Elliott Stover and Mary Frances Sargent Stover. His place of birth was Kilsyth, West Virginia. His parents, preceded him  in death..  His three brothers Judson, Joe, and Commodore Elliott Jr., preceded him in death.

Buford’s love of his life,  Lola Gay Stover with whom he was married for 65 years preceded  him in death.

Buford is a veteran of the US Military.  He served twenty years in the US Marine Corps. He served in World War II, and the Korean War. He was a member of Eight Ball Squadron and served under the command of Colonel  Pappy Boyington.of the Black Sheep Squadron

A funeral service will be held at the Munden Funeral Home Chapel at 1:00PM on Sunday October 2, 2011 with Chaplin officiating.Graveside services with military honors will be held Sunday, October 2, 2011, at the Greenwood Cemetery at Morehead City.

Buford is survived by his two sons, Larry Martin Stover and wife Johnnie Mae and Leslie H. Stover and one daughter, Ala Jean Stover. Buford is survived by five grandchildren, Larry Dean Stover, and wife Anna, Sheila Martin and husband Gary Martin, Craig Stover, April Turner and husband, Owen, and Laura Stover. He is also survived by three great grandchildren,  Halley Stover, Emily Martin and Dillon Martin.

Buford is survived by numerous nieces, Barbara Bruno and husband Joe, Geri Walters, Martha Ann O’Brien, Nephews, Marty Reid and  wife Betty, Jimmy Reid and  wife Connie, and nieces and nephews in Ohio and West Virginia.

The family will receive friends Saturday night October 1st from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Munden Funeral Home.

Buford’s family would like to thank all of his caregivers for the loving concern shown to him on his last journey in life.
