Brian Tatsuo Matsumoto, 66, of Morehead City, NC, passed away on Wednesday, August 10th, 2016.

A celebration of life will be held at 7:00 pm on Friday, September 23, 2016 at Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City.  There will also be a paddle out service at Oceanana Fishing Pier, Atlantic Beach on Saturday, September 24th, 2016; the time will be announced.

Brian was a Hawaiian native born in Wahiawa on March 22nd, 1950 to Isao “Frank” Matsumoto and Fumiko “Lorraine” Ohashi Matsumoto.  Brian graduated from Leilehua High School and found his way to the Mainland when he joined the United States Air Force in 1968 following high school.  After four years with the Air Force he pursued a career with the United States Postal Service where he worked for over 30 years in Oregon, New Jersey and North Carolina.  Not ready to stop working entirely, he picked up a part time position at Lowe’s where he assisted Carteret County locals with their home appliance needs.

Brian had a passion for the water and the outdoors.  He enjoyed surfing, kite surfing, stand up paddle boarding, hiking and riding his electric skateboard around Morehead City.  He also had a love for music and would often be found jamming’ out with his guitar.  He and three relatively new and younger friends recently formed a band called Aquasonic, where he played lead guitar.  He had a love for life and enjoyed cooking, entertaining, discussing UFO theories and spending time with his friends and wife, Linda of 23 years.  He always had a smile on his face and had a happy, laid-back spirit that was magnetic.

Brian will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.  He was the kind of man that anyone would be proud to call their son, brother, father, husband, or friend.

Brian is survived by his wife and best friend Linda Cook Matsumoto of Morehead City, NC; his son, Brandon Matsumoto and his fiancée Ali of Atlanta, GA; his mother, Lorraine Matsumoto of Waipahu, HI; his brother, Wayne and his wife Yuri Matsumoto; his sister, Candice and her husband Michael Matsunaga; his sister, Mae and her husband Gary Takata; along with a large extended family who still reside on the Island of Oahu in Hawaii. Brian also leaves behind his nieces, Alexis and her husband David George Caldwell II of Jacksonville, NC and Taylor Meadows of Greenville, NC.

He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Matsumoto.

The family will welcome friends one hour prior to the service on Friday, September 23, 2016 at Munden Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Brian’s name to the Buddy Pelletier Surfing Foundation, 5121 Chalk Street, Morehead City, NC 28557.
