Betty "BJ" Fox Frye

January 19, 1947 — September 2, 2021

Pine Knoll Shores

Betty Fox Frye passed away on September 2nd at the age of 74 from metastatic, Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC).   She accepted her diagnosis of TNBC in 2013 and metastatic TNBC in 2017 and she lived life to the fullest, understanding that for her the quality of time spent with family and friends took the greatest significance.  BJ decided to be joyful about having had a such a full life, rather than sad about having to depart.

Born in Catawba County in North Carolina, BJ was the second of six daughters born to Wade and Vera Fox.

She married Danny Frye in 1966 and over time they had two wonderful daughters.

B.J. excelled at being a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, giving excellent life advice, decorating and redesigning homes for family and friends, cooking, hosting and eating great meals, being an amazing seamstress, singing “happy birthday” poorly but with gusto, reheating the same cup of coffee multiple times, drinking a cold beer on the screened porch at 5:30, and because she became a lover of animals later in life, she excelled at being a dog mom and enjoyed doing anything with her loving, energetic, Maltipoo, Boomer, who stayed by her side to the very end.

B.J. was a sharp and talented businesswoman and had two successful careers which she was proud and very much enjoyed. She achieved journeyman status in the printing industry, working for several large printing companies in leadership roles and later she was successful at running and growing Conover Plastics Inc. (the business her father started in 1974).  She was an inspiration and an example to many. She retired in 2007 and moved full time to Pine Knoll Shores, NC in the southern Outer Banks with her treasured husband, Danny.

Her three grandsons described her in the following words:  Kind, loving, wise, strong…..  Some of the things her grandsons enjoyed doing with her and things they thought she was talented at were – walking on the beach, baking and playing Battleship (Miles-11); Just spending time with her lost in conversation (Dylan-24); She was a great driving coach and life mentor for me.  She was very therapeutic (Dalton-20).  Her grandsons also enjoyed watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune with their grandmother.

B.J. was preceded in death by her parents, Wade and Vera Fox, and her precious and cherished sister, Ellen Fox Wilson, who passed away in 2018, also from TNBC.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Danny Frye, her two daughters, Danna Frye McCall of Claremont, NC and Jeanna Frye and wife Diana of Jamestown, NC, along with her three grandchildren, Dylan McCall of Conover, NC, Dalton McCall of Claremont, NC and Miles Frye of Jamestown, NC and one great-grandchild, Aerys McCall.  She is also survived by four sisters, Liz Mauser, Cathy Fox, Dena Caldwell (Duane), and Lorena Gibson (Harry), brother-in-law, John Wilson, a myriad of nieces and nephews and her fully committed and loving dog, Boomer.

She was extremely grateful for the community of friends and family she had built in Pine Knoll Shores.

The family would like to thank Dr. Luis Cuervo, oncologist at Carteret Health Care for his deep knowledge and compassionate care, the staff at the Raab Cancer Clinic, along with Dr. Jeremy Force, medical oncologist at Duke Health, Hospice of Carteret County (Crystal), BJ’s sister, Liz Mauser, many neighbors and friends and a list of others too long to mention here that supported BJ and the family.

There will be no services at this time.  In lieu of flowers, we hope you will feel inspired to make a contribution to Hospice of Carteret County.

Family and friends are welcome to submit online condolences at www.mundenfuneralhome.net
