Betty Lou Guthrie Whaley, 67, of Newport, passed away Thursday, November 30, 2017 at Croatan Ridge Nursing Center.

Her funeral service will be held Monday, December 4, 2017 at 11 a.m. at Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City, officiated by Brother Bob Lowery. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Morehead City.

Betty was born on January 23, 1950 in Morehead City, NC to Fred and Pearl Guthrie.  She was raised in the “Promised Land” on Evans Street. She married Benny Whaley in 1966 and they had 2 children, George Thomas Whaley and Amy Lou Miller.

Betty loved her children and took care of them and volunteered at their schools. She was the director at Beaufort Christian Academy Day Care from 1990 to 1997.  After that, she started working at Britthaven Nursing Home in Newport. She was the first ward clerk and made many friends there. She continued as a care giver for elderly people and she loved taking care of them.

Betty loved music and she loved to dance. She loved taking care of her 4 grandchildren, they were everything to her.  She will always be remembered as loving, caring, fun and a wonderful person. She will be missed.

She is survived by her daughter, Amy Miller and husband, Jason of Havelock; son, George T. Whaley and wife, Pam of Newport; sisters, Nora Faye Dixon of Beaufort, Suzanne Willis and husband, Roland of Beaufort; brother, William “Bill” Guthrie and wife, Janet of Merrimon; grandchildren, Joseph Whaley, Benjamin Whaley, Jazmin Luciano, Aveda Luciano.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Pearl Guthrie; brothers, Donald Perry Guthrie, Fred Guthrie, Jr.; and her sister, Virginia “Ginny” Bryan.

Family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, December 3, 2017 at Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to The Bone Marrow Foundation at 515 Madison Avenue, Suite 1130, New York, New York 10022.
