Betty Margaret (Uhlinger) Tonissen

Betty Margaret Tonissen, 86, of Morehead City, passed away Wednesday December 26, 2012, at Harborview Health Center.
The family will hold a memorial service 3:00 pm Wednesday at Bridgeway Nazarene Church with Rev. Porter Graves officiating.
Betty was born and grew up as a missionary's kid in Irumu, Belgium Congo, which is now Democratic Republic of Congo. In 1939 she moved to California and graduated from Biola College with a degree in Christian Education and returned to her homeland with her husband and four children in 1963 to teach the english language to african adults and also to care for other missionary children. In the early 1970's she moved back to California and taught Christian Education to children. In 2010 she moved to Morehead City to live with her daughter Sharon and son-in-law Jim.
She is survived by two sons Paul Tonissen of Morehead City, and Dan Tonissen and wife Linda of Austin, TX: two daughters Ruth Tonissen of Ocean View, HI, and Sharon Leach and husband Jim of Morehead City: grandsons Jason Tonissen and wife Hannah of Morehead City, and Zack Leach and wife Kelley of Beaufort: a granddaughter Erin Leach of Greensboro: and brother Phil Uhlinger of Claremont, CA.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years Norman Edwin Tonissen, parents Andrew and Birdie Uhlinger, a sister Lois Pelltier, and brother Paul Uhlinger.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to United Hospice 1310 Helen Ave. New Bern, NC 28562.
