Bessie Leora Gookins

Bessie L. Gookins, 93, of Harkers Island, went home to be with her Lord, Wednesday February 8, at Carteret General Hospital.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 am Sunday at Free Grace Wesleyan Church with the Rev. Clinton Nelson officiating. Interment to follow at Vergie Mae Cemetery.
Bessie was a member of Free Grace Wesleyan Church, and a pastors wife for 50 years. Her door was always open to family, friends, missionaries, and general church officials.
She was survived by four daughters Mona Jeanne Lopez and husband Norman of Barefoot Bay, FL, Mary Marceille Stafford of Las Vegas, Wanda June Smith of Marianna, FL, and Elaine G. Lewis and husband Oliver of Harkers Island: four grandchildren Robert L. Smith, Jr., and wife Kathy, Diana D. Young, Sheri D. Ernst and husband John, and Mardell Y. Mitchell and husband Brian: seven great grandchildren: six great great grandchildren: close family-friends Mary Jo Morrow, Joan Geary, and Charles Giansericusa.
She was preceded in death by her parents Arthur and Lillie Lock, husband Rev. Floyd M. Gookins, seven sisters, six brothers, three son in-laws Peter Mardell, Col. Robert Stafford, and Robert L. Smith, Sr.
Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 pm Saturday at Free Grace Wesleyan Church.
