Ben E. Horton

The Reverend Dr. Benjamin Edward Horton, 68, of Morehead City, NC, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, May 18th , 2017 at Carolina East Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00pm Sunday, May 21st , at Straits United Methodist Church with Reverend Dennis Goodwin officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.

Ben was born December 6th , 1948 in Morehead City to Sidney Arendell Horton and Pansy Epps Horton. Upon graduating from West Carteret High School, he entered Wake Forest University where he received his BS in Education. He later went on to receive his Doctorate degree in Theology from Duke Divinity School. Ben greatly loved serving as a pastor at many churches through the state, with his final congregations being Straits United Methodist Church and North River United Methodist Church.

Ben truly loved his family and church family. He was a dedicated husband, father and proud grandfather. He loved to laugh and enjoyed life to its fullest. He had tremendous compassion for people and always went the extra mile to be there for them. He also had a great passion for sports and education.

Dr. Horton was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Jayne Cojocari Horton of Morehead City; two sons, Benjamin Edward Horton, II, and wife Laura, Sherwood Vick Horton, and wife Kylie, both of Smyrna; two step-daughters, Danielle Greer, and husband Walt, of Wilmington and Samantha Cieszko, of Charlotte; four grand children, Isis Rain Horton, Benjamin Edward Horton III, Kristen Thompson Horton, and Sherwood Vick Horton II, and one step-grandson, Cooper Greer. He is also survived by a brother, Sidney Arendell Horton, Jr. and wife Theresa, of Morehead City.

In lieu of flowers, an educational scholarship fund is being established in Ben’s memory. Donations can be made to the Rev. Ben Horton Scholarship Fund, 405 Pelican Harbor Road, Beaufort, NC 28516.
