Bedford Calvin Dowty Jr.

Bedford Calvin Dowty Jr., 71, of Beaufort, passed away on Sunday, February 26, 2023, at Carolina East Medical Center.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, March 9th at First Methodist Church in Morehead City, Pastor Powell Osteen presiding. The service will conclude with inurnment in the Columbarium at the Church.

Bedford, known to all as Calvin, was born on October 23, 1951, in Morehead City, North Carolina, to the late Bedford Calvin Dowty Sr. and Mary Rogers Dowty. As a local businessman in our county, Calvin worked in the heating and air conditioning business since the age of 12. He was the owner and operator of Eastern Heating and Cooling where he shared his wisdom and knowledge with numerous young men, giving them a career in the HVAC business. During his career he was also the chief engineer at The Sailor’s Snug Harbor.

Calvin was an active member of First Methodist Church in Morehead City where he appreciated his church family and the fellowship they had together. He also cherished his time with his church family at Opendoor Church in Winterville. Always happy to spend time with his daughters, Calvin encouraged his daughter Meredith in her musical endeavors and enjoyed shooting hoops with Jessica on the court. His community involvement included being an active Rotarian and a Mason with Ocean Lodge #405 in Morehead City.

Calvin loved the water and spent many summer days surfing. He also loved to skateboard, play basketball, and always enjoyed a nice long ride on his motorcycle. Calvin was a lifetime musician that enjoyed performing with the Sunshine Band, Laurence Stith’s Carteret Chorale, Eastwinds, and the choir at First Methodist Church.

Calvin was a loving father, “Opa” and brother who will be sorely missed by his family.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Staton Dowty; daughters, Meredith Dowty Hall of Greenville and Jessica Dowty (Dan Lewis) of Morehead City; sisters, Linda Johnston (Ron) of Morehead City and Valerie Ballard (Bob) of Merrimon; grandsons, Marshall, Mason and one more arriving in June; niece, Savannah; and nephew, Rob.
