Barry Edwin Townsend, Sr., 71, of Morehead City, formerly of Runnemede, NJ, died Wednesday, February 16, 2011 at Pitt County Memorial Hospital.

Services will be held 4:00 pm Sunday at Munden Funeral Home Chapel.

Mr. Townsend served in the 187th INF (Airborne) and retired from the New Jersey State Police. He served the community of Ashland, NJ, as a volunteer fireman for Ashland Fire Department. He was employed as a Ranger with the National Park Service for twelve years. His last duty station was at Cape Lookout National Shore.

He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Townsend of Morehead City; sons, Bradford Townsend and wife, Lauren of Morehead City, Barry Townsend Jr. and wife, Claudine of Dacula, GA; daughter, Barbara Hargis and husband, Edward of Cherry Hill, NJ; sons, Thomas Braddock and wife, Michelle of Greenville, NC, and Jason Braddock and wife, Julie of Sevierville, TN; sister, Sherry Diltz of Dripping Sprigs, TX; 16 grandchildren, Heather and Steven Hargis, Evelyn, Rebekah, Samantha, Jessica Townsend, and Bradford “Scottie” Townsend, Jr., Barry Townsend, III and Autumn Townsend, Robin, Melissa, Michele Braddock, and Thomas Braddock, Jr., Taylor, Megan, and Alex Braddock; three great-grandchildren, Leah and Madison Cayton, and Erica Braddock.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Charles Townsend.

The family will receive friends 3:00 to 4:00 pm prior to the service at the funeral home.
