Barbara Hancock Daniels

June 17, 1936 — February 28, 2024

Otway

Barbara Hancock Daniels, 87, of Otway, North Carolina, passed away peacefully early Wednesday, February 28, 2024, at Pruitt Health in Sea Level.

Barbara was born to the late Charles Sterling and Edna Gillikin Hancock on June 17, 1936. She grew up and spent most of her life on farmland passed down by generations of her family. She was a straight "A" student and valedictorian of Smyrna High School's class of 1954.

After graduation, she married her beloved Edwin "Red" Daniels. They built their home next to her parents' and there they raised their children and welcomed friends. Barbara also loved Ed's large family and they spent many weekends and summers with them on Cedar Island boating, swimming, fishing, clamming, etc.

Barbara was an excellent cook and worked in food service for 20 years at East Carteret High School so she could be off when her children were out of school. Barbara attended hundreds of school and sports events cheering on her children and grandchildren.

After retirement, she and Red took many road trips around America and Eastern Canada and loved spending time with very special family and friends in the mountains of North Carolina. However, Down East was home and their favorite place to be.

Barbara is survived by her daughter, Kim Boyd of Straits; her sons, Eddie Daniels of Morehead City, Ricky Daniels (Lisa) of Cedar Island, David Daniels (Tammy) of Straits, Jeffrey Daniels (Kevin) of Wilmington; her bonus daughter, Lori Nicholson (Carolyn) of Zebulon; sisters-in-law, Karen Hancock of Straits, and Callie Daniels of Fayetteville; grandchildren, Dustin Daniels (Kristy), Devin Daniels (Jordan), Dakota Earp (Stephen), Dayvee Jernigan (Dakota), Christina Mertes, Nicole Daniels, Brianne Lewis (Justin), Arlie Daniels (SandraJean), Lindsey Fuchs (Charles Michael), and Carlee Boyd; and great-grandchildren, Colton, Landon, Kelsea (Eddie), Behr, Charlotte, Macon, Brendle, Julia, Paisleigh, Aspen, Tatum, and Elliot.

In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her loving husband of 68 years, Ellis Edwin "Red" Daniels, who passed away in January of 2023; father and mother-in-law, Arlie and Maude Daniels; brothers, Tony Hancock and Sterling Hancock; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Bill and Arlene Brittingham, Royce and Gloria Emory, Durwood and Pauline Daniels, Frank Daniels, Neil and Judy Daniels; and her very special son-in-law, Bobby "Chop" Boyd.

A funeral service to honor Barbara’s life will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, March 1st at Munden Funeral Home, officiated by Rev. Nelson Koonce. Interment will follow at Carteret Memorial Garden. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., Thursday, February 29th at Munden Funeral Home.
