Arthur Kennedy Lewis, 84, of Morehead City, NC, died Tuesday, September 1, 2011 at Carteret General Hospital.

A memorial service will be held 11:00 am Monday at St. Peters United Methodist Church with Rev. Paul Stallsworth officiating.

Mr. Lewis was a veteran of WWII and Korea. He was the owner and operator of the Charter Boats "Bunny" and "Bunny II", and a private yacht captain for 35 years in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. For his heroic action on the night of September 26, 1961 he received the Silver Life-Saving Medal and the Carnegie Medal of Honor. The USNS Potomac experienced a number of explosions and fires that night while discharging a cargo of aviation fuel at the Morehead City Port. Mr. Lewis used his own vessel to rescue seven men who where clinging to pilings in the water and transport them to safety.

He is survived by his wife, Jo Anne Parsons Lewis of Morehead City, NC; sons, Arthur Kennedy Lewis, Jr. and wife, Judy, of Gallatin,TN and Ronald C. Melnar and wife Julia of Las Vegas, NV; daughter, Yvette S. Lewis of Morehead City, NC; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Lockie Lewis; brother, George Wyatt Lewis of Altavista, VA; and sister, Gladys Grantham of Morehead City, NC.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
