Armena “Mena” Dolloff Macartney, 84, of Morehead City, North Carolina, passed away on Monday, March 31, 2025, at Carteret Health Care.

A memorial service to honor Mena’s life will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 19th at First Presbyterian Church in Morehead City, officiated by Rev. Jake Young.

Born on January 19, 1941, in Laconia, New Hampshire, Mena was the daughter of the late Carl and Ethel Dolloff. After completing high school, she furthered her education at the New England Baptist School of Nursing. Over the course of 45 years, she was devoted to her nursing career, where her skill and caring nature touched the lives of many. During her time in New York, Mena made a significant impact working in a dialysis department, where her extraordinary care and compassion provided comfort to many in need. Later, upon moving to Morehead City, she continued her noble calling at the Raab Clinic, where her skills and nurturing spirit became invaluable to both colleagues and patients alike.

Mena’s unwavering commitment to serve others was evident through her extensive volunteer work. She dedicated her time to various volunteering efforts including being a Guardian ad Litem, advocating in court for children’s best interests. Mena’s kindness and support touched many lives and families in our community.

In her leisure time, Mena enjoyed knitting and quilting, crafting special gifts for her loved ones. She kept her mind engaged through reading, solving crossword puzzles, and watching "Jeopardy!" Her love for animals was evident in her passion for birdwatching and feeding local wildlife.

Mena was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church, where she loved singing the church choir. She treasured the friendships she formed there, particularly through her participation in the ladies' card group and lunch outings with friends. Mena loved travelling and jazz music with some of her fondest memories being made during trips to New Orleans for the Jazz Festivals. Visiting various places in the United States, Mena and Norman honeymooned at Sam and Phyllis Hampton’s ranch in Wyoming and returned there 40 years later for their last vacation together. Mena looked forward to summer trips with her family to the beautiful state of Maine. One of her most memorable trips was her vacation to Europe with her nursing colleagues.

Mena’s journey through life was characterized by compassion, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to those she served. She will be remembered as a lovely, funny, smart, sweet woman with a beautiful smile that could light up any room. She loved her family and was a devoted wife and the most incredible mother. Respected by all for her character, strength and kindness, Mena’s warmth and generosity will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege to know her.

Those remaining to cherish her memory are her daughters, Lisa McAllister and Jennifer White (Robert), all of Morehead City, NC; son, David Macartney (Trish) of Sandy Hook, CT; grandchildren, Andrew McAllister Jr. of Raleigh, NC and Hudson White and Molly White, both of Morehead City, NC; many dear friends; and Cassie her rescue cat.

In addition to her parents, Mena was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Norman Scarborough Macartney and her brother, Albert “Beege” Dolloff.
