Annie Elizabeth Coward Salter, age 97, of Marhallberg, NC died on January 15, 2016 at Snug Harbor on Nelson Bay, Sea Level, NC. She was born in Goldsboro, NC on July 29, 1918 to Allen and Lula Ipock Coward. She was valedictorian of the Goldsboro High School class of 1935, and continued her education at Meredith College in Raleigh, NC, graduating in 1939 with degrees in English and History. In later years, she received her state certification in Library Science from East Carolina University. In the fall of 1939 she moved to Carteret County where she began her thirty-two-year teaching career in the high schools at Smyrna, Beaufort and East Carteret.
In 1942 she married Richard “Lionel” Salter of Marshallberg. They remained happily married until his death in 1987. She became a member of the Marshallberg Baptist Church in 1942 and served there as organist and pianist for forty-one years.
Throughout her teaching career, Mrs. Salter was an active member of North Carolina Association of Educators, the National Retired Teachers’ division of AARP and Carteret County Retired School Personnel. In 2009 she was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the state’s highest civilian award, presented to individuals with a proven record of extraordinary service to North Carolina. In 2010 she became a fifty-year member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an international honor society for women educators. Her other memberships included: Friends of Fort Macon, Core Sound Waterfowl Museum; Foundation for Shackleford Horses, Marshallberg Community Club, and the Carteret County Historical Society. Mrs. Salter also served as docent at The History Place for many years.
She is survived daughters, Carolyn S. Mason of Bettie, NC and Barbara S. Gates of Fayetteville, NC; granddaughter Katie Mason Pearsall of Otway, NC; grandsons, Cameron and Ryan Gates of Fayetteville, NC; great-granddaughters Hailey and Lilly Pearsall of Otway, NC; sisters Melrose C. Lomax and husband Roy of Elizabethtown, NC; Margaret C. Jennette and husband Herm of Swansboro, NC; Lucille C. Meachen and husband, Jim of Goldsboro, NC, and brothers-in-laws Charles Riggs of Ft. Thomas, KY and Carl Raley of Evansville, IN. She leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews as well.
Mrs. Salter was preceded in death by her husband, Richard “Lionel” Salter; sisters, Evelyn Frances C. Riggs, and Susie C. Raley.
Munden Funeral Home and Crematory, Morehead City, will handle final arrangements. Visitation will be held at Marshallberg Baptist Church on Monday, January 15, from 1:00 to 2:00 pm. The funeral will be held, following visitation, at 2:00 pm. Internment will be at Victoria Cemetery in Marshallberg, immediately following the service.
