Annie Idell (Smith) Allen

October 7, 1925 — April 8, 2014

Annie Smith Allen, 88, of Newport, passed away Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at Carteret General Hospital.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 am Friday at Newport Baptist Church with Rev. Gary Carroll officiating. Interment will follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery.

Annie was a longtime active supporter and member of Newport Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday School Teacher, and member of the choir. She started out as a waitress for Sanitary Fish Market, and then was employed at CM Hill Hardware and then Allen & Bell Hardware, which was the family business. But most of her life was spent as a housewife and homemaker.

She is survived by two sons Walter N. Allen, Jr., (Sheryl) of Griffin, GA, and Forrest B. Allen (Karen) of Newport, NC; four grandchildren Walter N. Allen III (Bethany) of Jacksonville, FL, Capt. Daniel M. Allen of Fort Bragg, NC, F. Mason Allen (Kim Carolei) of Morehead City, NC, and W. Noah Allen (Ashlee) of Newport, NC; four great grandchildren Lucy J. Allen, Veronica S. Allen, Hallee N. Allen, and Colin M. Allen; two brothers Carolyn Smith (Dot) of New Bern, NC, and Rev. Jerry Smith (Hazel) of Bladenboro, NC; and a sister Jackie Smith Walker of New Bern, NC.

She was preceded in death by her parents Thomas and Jewel Smith, her husband Walter N. Allen, Sr, and two brothers Jason Smith, and B.T. "Hambone" Smith.

Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 pm Thursday at Newport Baptist Church.
