Annagene “Jean” Martha Young, 91, of Havelock, North Carolina passed away peacefully on Friday, February 23, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.
A private gathering of her family will be held at a later date to honor her life and her legacy.
Jean was the youngest of five children, born on February 2, 1933, in Frankfort, Kentucky. She developed a strong work ethic at an early age, one that characterized her work life as well as her personal life. Her organizational skills, attention to detail, and commitment to excellence were recognized throughout her career at Fleet Readiness Center East (FRCE) aboard MCAS Cherry Point, NC. She retired in 1993, after 25 years of faithful service.
Jean‘s greatest joy was her family. She was loved and appreciated greatly by her family for her loving ways, her quiet strength and wisdom, her positive outlook and her selflessness. She was always a patient listener, and a non-judgmental supporter. She found her greatest happiness in gathering her family together into her home. She was a wonderful cook, always preparing delicious meals for her family. For many, many years, she meticulously documented all of the events of every family member, producing volumes of information that will be cherished and live on for generations to come.
Jean lived a frugal life with regard to material things. If she ever splurged on anything, it was for plants and flowers to grow in her yard. That is where you could always find her, anytime the weather allowed. She could make anything grow and it was one of her greatest pleasures. When someone once asked her why she didn’t cut some of her beautiful flowers and bring them inside her home, she replied that they were fine right where they were, that she just loved to watch them grow. Very much how she felt about her family. She just loved to watch it grow and she was so much a part of that. Jean was always known as a graceful lady with a beautiful smile.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Onie Leon Flood and Lou Ella Flood; her siblings, Doris Payton, Leon Flood, Walter Flood, and Wyman Flood.
Those remaining to cherish her memory are her daughter, Deborah Collins (Kevin) of New Bern, NC; her sons, Mike Young (Jan) of Havelock, NC and Kevin Young (Karen) of Franklinton, NC; her grandchildren, Bryan Best (Holly) of Locust, NC, Heath Chism of Wilmington, NC, Jana Yates (Marty) of Mooroolbark, Australia, Sarah Reichert of New Bern, NC, Suzanne Reichert of New Bern, NC, Krystian Patterson (James) of Broadway, NC and Ashley Mitchell (Austin) of Raleigh, NC; her 14 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you sow the seeds of family love. “If you want to bring happiness to the world, go home and love your family” - Mother Teresa.
