Anita Murphy, 96, of Morehead City, passed away Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington.
Her funeral mass will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, January 29, 2018 at St. Egbert Catholic Church, officiated by Father Thomas Davis. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
Anita was born and raised in New York City. She had a successful career in retail which culminated in retiring from Macy’s as a manager. A highlight for her was helping to guide a balloon during the Thanksgiving Day Parade. She made Carteret County her home in the late 1980’s. She was constantly active, she was well-traveled abroad and she had the distinction of being the oldest troop leader in the Girl Scouts. She was a devout member of St. Egbert Catholic Church and was known for making rosaries for missionaries. She had many hobbies that included gardening, cooking, home improvements and decorating for the holidays.
Anita was a very loving and supportive wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her home was always open and welcoming.
She is survived by her daughters, Maureen Hewlett and husband, Tom, of Florence, Oregon, Kathleen Saunders and husband, Tom, of Morehead City; grandchildren, Heather, Harrison, Tommy and partner, Ranee, Holly and husband, Arnold, Haidyn and husband, Jeremy; great-grandchildren, Tessa, Courtney, Kaylee and Matthew.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Murphy; parents, James and Clara Scully; sister, Eileen Riley; brothers, Jim Scully, Joe Scully and Jack Scully.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at 262 Danny Thomas Pl, Memphis, TN 38105 or Shriners Hospitals for Children at 2900 Rocky Point Dr., Tampa, FL 33607.
