Alvah Powell Whealton, Sr. was born in Carteret County, North Carolina on July 29, 1916. He died on Sunday, May 6, 2012 in Phillips Healthcare Center of the Salemtowne Retirement Community in Winston-Salem, NC. He is survived by his son Alvah Whealton, Jr. and wife Louise of Winston-Salem, his grandson, Joshua Hauck-Whealton and wife, Monica, of Rensselaer, NY., and sister Therese W. Rhodes and husband, Wallace of Morehead City.
Alvah had been a resident of Salemtowne since May of 2011. Prior to moving to Winston-Salem he lived at Sea Level, NC. For the 18 years prior to that he had been a resident of Morehead City, NC. He was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Lottie Brinson Whealton, his parents, Joshua W. Whealton and Nina Willis Whealton, two sisters, Lillie W. Seamon, and Ruth W. Smith, and four brothers, Harold, Dan, Thurlow, and Kenneth.
Alvah graduated from Morehead City High School and was a WWII veteran. After the war he lived in Black Creek, NC for 17 years, where he owned a drug store and attended Atlantic Christian College, obtaining a degree in Chemistry Education. Soon after, he went to work for Sears in Wilson, NC, transferring later to Greensboro, NC, where he lived for 25 years.
On Friday, May 11, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Winston-Salem there will be a family reception at 9:30 am, followed by a memorial service at 10:00am.
The funeral will take place at 11:00 am Tuesday May 15, 2012 at Munden Funeral Home in Morehead City. Family visitation will be one hour prior to the service at 10:00 am, and burial will follow the service at Bayview Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Joymakers Choir of the First Baptist Church, Morehead City, where Mr. Whealton was a member.
