Alton Rudolph "Rock" Hardison Jr, 85, of Beaufort, NC, died Tuesday February 19, 2013 at Crystal Bluffs.
His memorial service will be held 12:00 noon Friday at Ann Street United Methodist Church with Rev. David Wade officiating and Dr. Ann Sims assisting.
He was born in Roanoke Rapids, NC on November 22,1924, to the late Alton R. and Maggie Midgette Hardison. Rock graduated from Roanoke Rapids High School where he lettered in football, basketball, and baseball. He served in the US Army Air Force from 1946-1948. Rock continued his education at Wake Forest College graduating in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science degree. While there he was a member of Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity, and lettered in baseball. After a seven year stint (1952-1959) with American Discount Corp ie. Barclay Bank, in 1960, Rock pursued his life long desire as a charter boat captain. He owned and operated "The Rock Along" til 1967. Following he taught at Smyrna Elementary School during the 1967-1968 school year. Rock was employed by BB&T in 1968 from which he retired in 1988 as Vice President and City Executive.
He was a former member of Morehead City Jaycees, and Morehead City-Beaufort Elks Lodge 1710. He served on the board of the Carteret County Economic Developement Council, Carteret County Evaluation and Review, Beaufort Urban-Renewal Commission. Rock was past president of the Fabulous Fishing Club, Beaufort Rotary Club, Business and Professionals Club, Carteret County Chamber of Commerce, and Morehead City Country Club. He was a member of Ann Street United Methodist Church, Beaufort, NC.
He is survived by a son Rockmon " Rocky" Hardison and wife Ashley Garrett of Beaufort: two grandchildren Lois Mason Hardison, and Rockmon Garrett Hardison: one sister Sandra Taylor of Sneads Ferry: and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his beloved and devoted wife of 37 years, Lois Chitty Hardison, two sisters Louise Mulligan, and Doris Bass.
Visitation will be held 5:00-7:00 Thursday at Munden Funeral Home.
