Alton Leon Chadwick, 87, of Marshallberg passed from this life into his heavenly home on June 27, 2016 at Snug Harbor in Sea Level.

A celebration of his life will be held 11:00 Thursday at New Hope Baptist Church in Beaufort with Pastor Darryl Chadwick officiating.

He was born August 4, 1928, in Marshallberg, to John Manson and Beatrice Chadwick. He was the fourth son who along with his brothers learned to love the farm and commercial fishing.

As a young man he joined the U.S. Coast Guard. After an honorable discharge in 1951, he joined the Coast Guard Reserve until 1954. He was the last light keeper at Cape Lookout Lighthouse.

He has been community minded and innovative throughout his life. He helped establish the Marshallberg Fire Department in 1954. He helped design and manufactured the first tanker for the department and remained an active member until 2004 after 50 years of service.

On October 3, 1987 Alton married his beloved Roma B Nelson at the old home place in Marshallberg.

After retiring from commercial fishing, he worked with the Autism Society of North Carolina in their crab pot division as a consultant and fabricator. There, as well as in all his endeavors, the people were blessed with his fun loving joyful spirit and sense of humor.

He is survived by his wife Roma, of Beaufort, a daughter Tibby Wilde of Otway, a son Brian Chadwick and wife Janet of Marshallberg, a heart son D.A. Lewis and wife Marilyn of Marshallberg, grandchildren Serina Sigler, Katrina Cahoon and Paul Lewis, great grandchildren Destiny M. Smith, Celeste Gillikin, Sabrina Cahoon, Joshua Cahoon, great great grandson Parker Smith and many other family members and dear friends as well as his loyal dog Lady.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Earl, Guion and Edward (Sug).

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at New Hope Church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Marshallberg Community Club, P.O. Box 55, and Marshallberg N. C. 28553 of which he was a member.
